Winter workshop addresses environmental statistics

December 5, 2006

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — “Environmental and Environmental Health Statistics” is the theme of the University of Florida’s Department of Statistics ninth annual winter workshop Jan. 12 and 13 at the Reitz Student Union.

This year’s workshop will explore emerging statistical methods for analyzing data related to environmental problems with talks by leading statistical researchers, who will be speaking on a number of topics to include extreme value theory as applied to hurricane winds and spatial modeling of environmental health data.

An added feature of the conference this year is a poster session on Jan. 12 for young researchers. Senior graduate students (fourth year and higher) or UF faculty members working on research in environmental and environmental health statistics may be eligible to present a poster. Send poster submissions to Carol Rozear at carol@stat.ufl.edu.

The workshop opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 11. Presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. and run throughout the day on Friday and Saturday. The workshop wraps up with a barbecue on Jan. 13.
