New World School of Arts holiday concert to be broadcast on WUFT

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The New World School of the Arts holiday concert will be broadcast at 1 p.m. Dec. 24 on WUFT, Channel 5.

The Dec. 7 concert performed in Miami includes such popular Christmas selections as “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” “White Christmas” and a blues version of “Silent Night” by Rhonda Polay. Accompanied by pianist Dan Sandlin, highlights include the Mendelssohn chorus “How Lovely Are The Messengers” from his oratorio “St. Paul,” John Leavitt’s “Festival Sanctus” and a jazz version of the American folk song “Go Tell It On The Mountain.”

Instructor William Carney recites the story “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” and the evening concludes with “A Welsh New Year’s Carol,” a new arrangement, especially written by Albert Clark, director of vocal music.

Located in Miami, the New World School of the Arts is a cooperative venture of Dade County Public Schools, Miami-Dade Community College and the University of Florida. The school prepares students for professional careers in dance, music, theatre and the visual arts. The University of Florida College of Fine Arts grants the Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees to NWSA students in the areas of art, creative photography, dance, graphic design, theater and music.
