UF faculty member honored for excellence in nursing education

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida College of Nursing leader Ann Horgas, Ph.D., R.N., has received the Rose and George Doval Award for Excellence in Nursing Education.

Horgas, the college’s associate dean for research, was recognized by New York University College of Nursing for her progressive efforts in nursing education. Horgas will receive the award this month at the 19th annual Celebration for Nursing Excellence in New York City.

Horgas, an associate professor who has been at UF since 2000, is one of the country’s leading nurse researchers on pain and aging. She is currently conducting a National Institutes of Health-funded study on methods to assess pain in nursing home residents with dementia.

Horgas is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and has been awarded the Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing Research and the Springer Award in Geriatric/Gerontologic Nursing. She also has co-authored a book on dealing with behavioral problems in nursing homes and has written numerous publications on topics such as pain, everyday competence in old age and mental health in aging.
