IT task force reviewing UF structures

November 28, 2006

The IT Governance Task Force is currently working to improve the computing environment at the University of Florida by reviewing how all technology systems and inputs will be made across campus.

“What we’re attempting to do is like the U.S. Constitution, create a set of guidelines on how to make IT decisions,” said Marc Hoit, interim chief information officer and professor of civil engineering.

Hoit said the task force soon will reach out to various committees and groups that oversee different sectors of technology on campus, such as academic technology, IT staff and administrators.

“We already have some committee structures in place, but we need to create additional groups,” he said, noting the task force will recommend where and how student and faculty input will be utilized, for example in areas like architecture, infrastructure and applications.

The university has a few active information technology advisory committees, specifically for security, networking and academics, but the task force will work to create a more structured environment for managing and implementing technology decisions. The task force expects to complete its work by next fall.
