UF's long-distance engineering program expands

May 23, 2006

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida College of Engineering has the EDGE, and it’s getting sharper.

The Electronic Delivery of Graduate Engineering, UF EDGE, is a unique long-distance opportunity to help engineers strengthen their careers by earning master’s degrees. And the UF EDGE program is enhancing the 2006 fall schedule by adding another course. Designed Experimentation for Engineers and Scientists, ESI 6912, allows for a hands-on learning by conducting and analyzing experimental tests.

“By making this course available through distance learning, we can accommodate students with families and job responsibilities and provide very flexible curriculum schedules, while maintaining the highest standards of graduate education, in keeping with our ranking as a top nationally recognized engineering school,” said Pramod P. Khargonekar, dean of the College of Engineering.

The UF EDGE program offers six master’s degree programs with five specialization areas:

  • Civil and coastal engineering
  • Computer and information sciences engineering
    • with specializations in bioinformatics
  • Electrical and computer engineering
  • Environmental engineering sciences
    • specializations in water resource planning and management
    • specializations in water, wastewater and stormwater engineering
  • Mechanical and aerospace engineering
    • non-thesis masters degree in solid mechanics and design
    • master’s degree in fundamentals of thermal fluids transport
  • Materials science and engineering

The program also offers two graduate-certificate programs designed to sharpen the careers of practicing engineers in environmental policy and management and materials science engineering.

Distance learning students work with professors via phone, fax, e-mail or the Internet.

“Engineers and scientists will find in this course a review of successful experimentation practices that they can use immediately in their work,” said Diane Schaub, the instructor for the course.

Registration is open and all UF EDGE classes begin Aug. 23. More information is available at the Web site http://ufedge.eng.ufl.edu.
