April 18, 2006

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –– Alachua County students will begin dreaming of careers as world-renowned artists when the Harn Museum of Art hosts the Alachua County Student Art Exhibition from April 20 to May 14.

The exhibition, on view in the Chandler Auditorium, will give 75 students from 19 schools the chance to display their work in one of the largest university art museums in the nation that includes works by artists such as Claude Monet and Ansel Adams. Visitors at the UF Cultural Plaza’s inaugural Earth Day event on Saturday, April 22, will be able to tour the exhibition while enjoying the day’s numerous activities both inside and outside the Harn Museum and the Florida Museum of Natural History. An awards ceremony and reception to honor the young artists and recognize their teachers and families will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 27.

The Alachua County Student Art Exhibition, held each spring at the Harn Museum, is the culmination of the academic years’ creative efforts. The artwork reflects the classroom use of Harn Museum resources, guided visits to the museum and visits to the schools by Harn Museum education staff and docents.

Funding for school visits to the Harn Museum of Art is provided by the School Board of Alachua County through a grant from the State of Florida, Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council.
