Florida Museum to celebrate Earth Day with special activities

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History will celebrate Earth Day from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, with several special activities, including donating $1 from every Butterfly Rainforest adult admission to the Lubee Bat Conservancy.

Activities from noon to 3 p.m. include “Mask Making” and “Curiosity Corner,” which includes information on Florida manatees and sea turtles.

From noon to 1 p.m., the City of Gainesville’s Nature Operation Division will present “Some Like it Hot!: Discover How Fire is Used to Maintain Florida’s Ecosystems” and from 1 to 3 p.m., natural fiber artist Nancy Gildersleeve will demonstrate palm weaving. At 2 p.m. the Butterfly Rainforest will hold a butterfly release inside the vivarium. (paid admission required)

The Lubee Bat Conservancy is an international non-profit organization working with others to save fruit and nectar bats and their habitats through conservation, research and education.

The Earth Day celebration is being held in cooperation with the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art.
