Three art exhibitions in university galleries host receptions

Public receptions for three art exhibitions on the University of Florida campus will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

  • The annual Student Arts Juried Exhibition continues through March 10 in the University Gallery.

    Juried by Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator of North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art, the show includes painting, sculpture, photography, and drawing as well as video. Sydney Hodkinson, Almand Chair of composition at Stetson University, juried the musical composition component of the show, which features works by University of Florida students. The reception includes an awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. and a dance performance by UF’s MOD Project dance ensemble at 8:15 p.m.

    The exhibition is sponsored by the Fine Arts College Council.

    Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. It’s closed Saturdays, Mondays and academic holidays. The University Gallery is located inside Fine Arts Building B.

  • “Ligature 2006,” the 15th Annual Juried Student Design Exhibition & Symposium, continues through March 24 in the Focus Gallery.

    The exhibition features work that reflects the range of visual communication at the University. In addition to the exhibition, Vox Graphis, the student-run design organization and organizer, will host a design symposium during the weekend featuring seminars and workshops with nationally recognized guest designers Carlos Segura (Segura Inc., Chicago), Steve Frykholm (Herman Miller Inc., Michigan), Doug Grimmett (Primal Screen, Atlanta), and Florencio Zavala (Studio Number One, Los Angeles).

    The exhibition is sponsored by the University of Florida Graphic Design Program and in part by the Fine Arts College Council, University of Florida Student Government & Vox Graphis.

    Focus Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery is closed weekends and academic holidays. The Focus Gallery is located inside Fine Arts Building C.

  • “The East of West: Florida Enchantments and Victorian Tourism” continues through March 31 in the Grinter Gallery.

    This show has been created in conjunction with the International 18th and 19th Century British Women Writers Conference, sponsored by the University of Florida English Department, and an exhibition at the Baldwin Library. The show contains paintings from the Harn Museum of Art that focus broadly on the late Victorian transatlantic tourist connection to Florida and images by Caldecott from the Baldwin Library.

    Grinter Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery is located in the main lobby of Grinter Hall.
