Noted artist and UF alumnus to lecture at Harn

March 16, 2006

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Robert Fichter, a UF alumnus, artist and professor of art at Florida State University, will present a lecture at 3 p.m. March 26 at the Harn Museum of Art. He will talk about his work and images included in the exhibition “Aura of the Photograph: The Image as Object.”

In the lecture, titled “What Should a Photograph Look Like?,” Fichter will discuss his lush, dense photographs, prints, books and computer images that deal with sociopolitical issues concerning humankind and humans’ interaction with the natural environment. Preferring to describe himself as an “image-maker” rather than a photographer, Fichter is also known as a “photographist” who paints and draws on his photographs and creates etchings and lithographs using photographic processes.

Fichter received his Master of Fine Arts from Indiana University in photography and printmaking after completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Florida. He has held visiting artist and teaching positions at UCLA, Cranbrook Academy of Art and Florida State University. His work is frequently exhibited throughout the United States. His awards include National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in 1979 and 1984.
