March 21, 2006

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Distinguished scholar H. Alan Shapiro, W.H. Collins Vickers Professor of Archeology at John Hopkins University, will present new insights into the arts of classical Greece with his illustrated lecture, “Painters, Patrons, and Playboys in Ancient Athens” at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Harn Museum of Art.

This lecture marks the fifth event in a series of lectures and symposia hosted by the Harn Eminent Scholars Program of the University of Florida School of Art and Art History in cooperation with the Harn Museum of Art. Titled “Making Art History: Eight Events,” these presentations create an ongoing discussion on current scholarship in Art History by bringing together eminent scholars whose work represent a range of fields.

Past speakers have included Glenn Lowry, Director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York; Boris Groys, Global Distinguished Professor at New York University; Patrick McNaughton, Chancellor’s Professor at Indiana University; and Olga Palagia, Professor of classical Archaeology at the University of Athens, Greece.

While Friday’s lecture will be the last of the semester, more speakers have been lined up for the fall.
