Distinguished UF alumnus Byong Man Ahn to speak at UF about "Dealing with North Korea"

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Byong Man Ahn, president of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and alumnus of the University of Florida, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in the Presidents Room in Emerson Alumni Hall.

Ahn’s speech, titled “Dealing with North Korea,” is sponsored by the UF International Center (UFIC), Asian Studies Program, and Political Science Department, in collaboration with the Asian and Pacific American Law Student Association and Transnational and Global Studies Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

Dr. Ahn received his doctorate in political science from UF in 1974 and was given the Distinguished Alumnus Award by UF in April 2005. He is recognized in South Korea and throughout the world for his innovations in language instruction and his research in area studies. Under his leadership, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies has gained an international reputation for excellence in a number of fields. Ahn has written extensively on issues related to government, economics and culture, and is the author of “Elites and Political Power in South Korea” and other works.

The mission of the International Center is to enhance the educational environment and experience of UF’s students, faculty, and staff by promoting a global perspective. Through its International Speakers Program, the UFIC encourages discussion and debate regarding international issues on campus and in the community. Past speakers include former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nancy Soderberg, John Prendergast of the International Crisis Group, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, David Ballard from the Office of Foreign Press for the U.S. State Department, and senior military correspondent for Knight Ridder Newspapers, Joe Galloway.
