Documentary made at UF to be shown nationally on PBS

February 7, 2006

“Negroes with Guns: Rob Williams and Black Power,” a documentary produced by the University of Florida Documentary Institute, will be aired nationally on PBS stations at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7.

The 60-minute documentary was completed in 2004 and was shown on WUFT-TV, but this is the first time it will be broadcast nationally, said Sue Wagner, director of communications for WUFT-TV. It will be presented as part of the Emmy Award-winning Independent Lens series of documentaries and dramas. It will be seen locally on WUFT-TV, Channel 5, found on Channel 3 on Cox Cable in Gainesville.

“Negroes with Guns” combines modern-day interviews with rare archival news footage to tell the story of Rob Williams, the forefather of the Black Power movement and a complex man who played a pivotal role in the struggle for respect, dignity and equality for all Americans, according to the Web site for the film.

The UF Documentary Institute is part of the College of Journalism and Communications.
