MOTOWN comes to UF Cultural Plaza Jan. 21

November 17, 2005

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History, Harn Museum of Art and University of Florida Performing Arts host MOTOWN at the Cultural Plaza, a fund-raiser benefiting the University of Florida Cultural Plaza, on Jan. 21.

The corner of Hull Road and 34th Street will become Detroit City – complete with cars, musical instruments and record albums. The event is black tie optional, and Motown attire is welcomed. You may even see a Supreme or two in the crowd.

Begin the evening at 5:30 p.m. at either the Florida Museum or the Harn Museum for cocktails. A dinner buffet will be served at both museums following the cocktail hour. The museums’ exhibits will also be open for your enjoyment. The party moves to the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts for live music and dancing to the sounds of The Funk Brothers at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets for MOTOWN at the Cultural Plaza are $150 per person, with proceeds benefiting the three UF Cultural Plaza institutions equally. Concert seating will be determined by ticket purchase date and tickets will be mailed on Jan. 9.

The Funk Brothers are Motown’s unsung heroes. The studio musicians behind hits of Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles and many more Motown legends, The Funk Brothers actually played on more No. 1 records than The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley – combined. In 2003, The Funk Brothers won two Grammy Awards for the soundtrack to the film “Standing in the Shadows of Motown.”

Performance-only tickets are $30 and go on sale Jan. 9 at the Phillips Center Box Office.
