Development series for UF faculty examines diversity

November 3, 2005

What: The University of Florida’s Provost Office will host a “Conversation about Faculty Diversity, Recruitment and Retention,” the third event of its fall Faculty Development Conversations series.

When: Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 9-10

Where: Reitz Student Union

Background: This “conversation” begins Wednesday with a series of small group workshops led by JoAnn Moody, director for the Northeast Consortium for Faculty Diversity. Participants will explore how to identify and overcome cognitive errors, which affect evaluation decisions during faculty searches, tenure reviews and promotion processes.

The following day will include a roundtable event focused on retention. Administrators and registered guests will share insights for fine-tuning mentoring skills and helping junior faculty thrive, especially non-majority and women faculty.

Participating will be President Bernie Machen, Provost Janie Fouke, other university administrators, faculty and student leaders.

Contact: Debra Walker King, associate provost for faculty development, (352) 392-6004, or e-mail her at roundtable@ufl.edu.
