Actor, inspirational speaker to present programs on campus

October 26, 2005

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Former television sitcom actor Jaleel White will speak Oct. 27 at the University Auditorium, and inspirational speaker Kyle Maynard will present a program Nov. 1 in the Reitz Student Union Grand Ballroom.

Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the shows will begin promptly at 8 p.m. Sponsored by the ACCENT Speaker’s Bureau, the shows are free and open to the public. Tickets are required for admittance into White’s speech at the University Auditorium and can be picked up when doors open.

White will speak about his experiences as Steve Urkel on the television show “Family Matters.” He will share anecdotes about the show and writing for television. He will also recount his story of trying to make it in the real world upon graduating college. White’s down-to-earth perspective will offer advice on ways to find one’s own voice in life while still standing out in the crowd.

Maynard’s “Success Without Excuses!” is a compelling presentation designed to motivate and inspire. Despite a congenital defect that robbed him of arms from below the elbows and his legs from below the knees, Maynard became a winning high school wrestler, weightlifter and gifted student. His presentation will include how his “no excuses” philosophy helps him meet the numerous challenges that confront him daily. Maynard hopes to show the audience how they too can overcome the great challenges in their own lives.

ACCENT Speaker’s Bureau, the largest student-run speakers bureau in the nation, has been bringing prominent speakers to the University of Florida since the 1960s.
