GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Dr. Timothy Flynn, the University of Florida College of Medicine associate dean for graduate medical education, has been appointed to two posts with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Surgery.

Flynn will serve on the board of directors for the ACGME, the organization that accredits and evaluates medical residency programs, beginning in October. He also was elected to serve as vice chairman-elect of the American Board of Surgery. In June 2006 he will assume the role of vice chairman and in 2007 he will become the American Board of Surgery’s chairman.

Flynn graduated from Louisiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in zoology in 1971 and earned his medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine in 1974. Flynn then joined the U.S. Navy and was on active duty for three years, spending one of those years as a medical officer in Antarctica.

After leaving the Navy, Flynn completed his residency at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and then served as an assistant professor there for four years. He came to UF in 1984 and has moved up in the ranks during his 21 years at UF from assistant professor to his current post as associate dean for graduate medical education. He also directed the general surgery residency program for 10 years.

Flynn is president of the Alachua County Medical Society, has been involved in dozens of hospital and university committees, has held several national Veterans Affairs appointments and has served on two statewide committees, among other activities.

Through his new roles with the American Board of Surgery and the ACGME, he said he hopes to help bring more consistency to graduate medical education across the training spectrum and increase support for providers of graduate medical education.
