Staff inspects students' rooms for fire safety violations

The UF Residence Hall staff is conducting fire safety inspections through Sept. 9 as part of Safety and Security Week.

“Staff will be inspecting student rooms for compliance with fire safety rules and regulations,” said Sharon Blansett, assistant director of housing. “Other fire safety education materials including bulletin boards will be displayed, and residents will participate in mandatory fire drills during this time period.”

Residents not in compliance with fire safety rules and regulations are provided educational materials and are required to be in compliance for a second inspection of their rooms. Fire safety inspections are conducted each semester. Future instances of noncompliance may result in judicial action.

“The Broward fire during check-in week was a grim reminder to all of us how easily fires can start and how quickly they spread,” added Blansett. “If I could drill one thing into students’ heads about fire safety, it would be to always evacuate when a fire alarm goes off.”
