UF veterinary college dean named to economic commission

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Joseph A. DiPietro, D.V.M., dean of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, has been appointed to the board of directors of the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues.

The NCVEI’s mission is to improve the economic base of the veterinary profession, ensuring that the delivery of veterinary care and service meets the needs of society. The commission develops and implements strategies to ensure the future relevance, direction, responsiveness, capacity and economic health of the veterinary profession.

The commission’s goals include keeping the economic future of the veterinary profession at the top of the national agenda, establishing clear criteria for measuring its own impact and promoting the critical importance of the veterinary profession to a variety of audiences.

Currently, the commission is working to develop new economic opportunities in the food-animal sector and the public health and biomedical industries, as well as strategies and resources necessary to continue attracting outstanding people to the veterinary profession.

DiPietro is president of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and also is a member of the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education and Economics advisory board.

He has served as dean of the UF veterinary college since 1996.
