Interim dean of the college of fine arts chosen for 2005-06

April 11, 2005

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida’s College of Fine Arts will have a new interim dean for the 2005-06 academic year, effective July 1.

Dr. Barbara Korner will serve as interim dean after Don McGlothlin, who has been College of Fine Arts dean for 15 years, steps down on June 30. McGlothlin has served 34 years as a university arts administrator. He will take a sabbatical leave before returning to teaching and the pursuit of his research interests.

Before coming to UF, Korner served in a variety of administrative positions, including special assistant to the chancellor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and dean of fine arts at Seattle Pacific University. She is currently serving as associate dean in the College of Fine Arts, where her responsibilities have focused on student and academic affairs.

Korner has a broad understanding of all aspects of the College’s operations, ranging from personnel and budgetary matters to collaborative programs and partnerships and fundraising and development efforts.

With a doctoral degree in interdisciplinary fine arts, Korner has encouraged and facilitated interdisciplinary work in the College. She is the co-founder and co-director of the Leadership Institute of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, which has been training and supporting university administrators in the arts since 2000.

A national search for a new dean for the College of Fine Arts was started last fall, but it was not possible to complete the search without the participation of a new provost. The search for the new dean will resume in the fall term with the goal of having a new dean in place by July 1, 2006.

“Korner’s personal commitment to excellence in graduate and undergraduate education and the work of the faculty is evidenced in her own creative research and teaching,” said Joe Glover, interim provost.
