UF Trustee Albert Thweatt Resigns From Board

February 9, 2005

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida Trustee Albert W. Thweatt Sr. has resigned his position due to business commitments, board Chairman Manny Fernandez announced today.

Thweatt, founder and chief executive officer of Alrod Enterprises, said his firm places heavy demands on his time.

“More specifically, the hectic schedule of the past year has taken a toll on the development of my business, and I believe that the time needed to support its growth will significantly interfere with the contribution I want to make toward matters associated with the university,” he said.

Fernandez said Thweatt has been a highly valued member of the board whose experience and expertise will be missed.

“I have worked with Al Thweatt since our board was created, and without exception it has been a pleasure. He is an outstanding individual who has made tremendous contributions to the University of Florida,” Fernandez said.

UF President Bernie Machen said, “I certainly understand and respect his decision to step down, but the university will miss his involvement.”

Thweatt, of Petersburg, Va., was named to the board when it was formed in 2001. He has held a number of positions in the Virginia educational system, including assistant principal of Hopewell City School and staff specialist for the University of Virginia.

Thweatt earned his bachelor’s degree from Elizabeth City State University in 1965, his master’s from Virginia State University in 1971 and his doctorate from the University of Virginia in 1980.

The Florida Board of Governors is expected to name Thweatt’s successor at its Feb. 24 meeting.
