Six Chosen as Inaugural Members in UF Academy of Teaching Scholars

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida has announced the six inaugural members to its new Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars. The members will serve three years as the advisory board for the University Center for Excellence in Teaching.

They are:

  • Laurence Alexander, Department of Journalism, College of Journalism and Communications.
  • Robert Cox, Rinker School of Building Construction, College of Design, Construction and Planning.
  • Gail Kauwell, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
  • Doug Levey, Department of Zoology, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Michael Olexa, Department of Food and Resource Economics, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
  • Robert Ray, Department of English, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

During their tenure, the members will assist the UCET in developing campus-wide strategies to enhance the educational environment at UF. Additionally, Academy members will serve to elect future Distinguished Teaching Scholars.

After completing their three-year terms on the advisory board, members will retain the title of Distinguished Teaching Scholar and continue to be a part of the Academy.

“The Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars serves to recognize those among our outstanding scholars who have made sustained contributions to the teaching enterprise at UF,” said Joseph Glover, interim provost. “In accepting this honor the inaugural members of the academy have agreed to serve as the UCET advisory board to help improve the state of the teaching arts at UF.”
