UF Appoints Cal State Dean To Head College Of Education

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Catherine Emihovich, dean of education at California State University in Sacramento, has been named dean of the University of Florida College of Education effective Aug. 1.

“I am very pleased that the university has been able to hire Catherine Emihovich as dean of the College of Education,” said UF Provost David Colburn. “Catherine was our top choice, has extensive experience as a successful administrator and is a nationally recognized scholar. She comes with a strong commitment to teaching and scholarship as well as personal dedication to working with state leaders and public school teachers in meeting the needs of students.”

Prior to her tenure at California State, Emihovich was a professor in the department of counseling and educational psychology at the State University of New York in Buffalo. Other appointments include service as an associate professor in the department of educational research at Florida State University and an assistant professor in the department of educational psychology at the University of South Carolina.

She also served as director of the Buffalo Research Institute on Education for Teaching at the State University of New York in Buffalo, program coordinator for educational psychology in the department of educational research at Florida State and as an English teacher for various high schools in New York.

Her numerous publication credits include co-authoring “Transforming Schools and Schools of Education: A New Vision for Preparing Educators” and “Sex, Kids and Politics: Health Services in Schools,” and editing “Locating Learning: Ethnographic Perspectives on Classroom Research.” She also was editor of Anthropology and Education Quarterly.

Emihovich received her bachelor’s degree in speech and drama from Syracuse University, and her master’s degree in measurement and statistics and her doctorate in educational psychology from the State University of New York in Buffalo.

She will fill the UF College of Education dean position that has been served on an interim basis since July 2000 by Ben F. Nelms, who will return to a faculty position.
