UF Sponsored Research Funding Passes $300 Million Mark

August 18, 2000

GAINESVILLE — The University of Florida’s research funding will top $315 million in awards in fiscal year 1999-2000, up 6.4 percent from the previous year’s total of $296 million, according to figures released Friday.

The increase reflects the university’s continued emphasis on research and the strong commitment of UF faculty and graduate students, said Win Phillips, UF vice president for research and dean of the graduate school.

“We’ve promoted our research enterprise, and the faculty have been very responsive,” Phillips said. “The increase in grant awards not only benefits the university, but it also has positive impact on the local community and the state.”

The increase is a result of enhanced support from several sources, Phillips said. Major supporters of research at UF include the federal government, state and local government, industry and foundations.

The $315 million is a 12.5 percent gain from the 1998 figure of $280 million.
