New Dean Named At UF College Of Veterinary Medicine

October 30, 1996

GAINESVILLE — Dr. Joseph A. DiPietro has been named the new dean of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, following a national search.

Presently an administrator at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana-Champaign, DiPietro is known for his scientific contributions to the epidemiology, control and treatment of parasitic diseases of large farm animals, with particular interest in those afflicting horses, cattle and swine.

DiPietro will begin his new position at UF on Feb. 1. He will succeed Dean Richard Dierks, who retires in December. Dierks came to UF from the U of I seven years ago after serving as dean of that institution for 13 years.

His appointment was announced jointly by Dr. David Challoner, vice president for health affairs at UF’s Health Science Center, and Dr. Jim Davidson, vice president for agricultural affairs at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

“Dr. DiPietro is one of the world’s leading experts on the treatment of parasitic disease in animals,” Challoner said. “He has helped advance new drug therapies that have saved hundreds of millions of dollars in the production of food animals and large sports animals.”
