UF research funding hits $644.4 million in 2012, surpassing non-stimulus record

UF researchers ID chemical in cigarette smoke linked to lowered levels of “good” cholesterol

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Cigarette smoking’s association with heart disease has been known for decades, but researchers are still not certain what chemicals or molecular processes in the body form the basis of that link. Now University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville researchers have unlocked some of the specifics, finding that a toxic compound in cigarette smoke called benzo(a)pyrene slows the production of “good” cholesterol, also known as high-density lipoprotein, or HDL.

$10 UFPA student tickets on sale Friday

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Tickets for University of Florida Performing Arts performances in September and October go on sale at noon Friday. With a valid Gator1 card, students can purchase single tickets for $10 at the Phillips Center Box Office or the University Box Office at the Reitz Student Union.
