University of Florida vertebrate paleontologist Jonathan Bloch compares the nail and skull of an ancient extinct primate, Notharctus tenebrosus. The first fully articulated foot of the 47-million-year-old primate was examined in a study published Jan. 10 in PLoS ONE and showed traits of both a claw and a nail, indicating it was in a transitional state.
