In this photo released from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, pathogen expert Ariena H. C. van Bruggen analyzes compost samples for traces of salmonella in her lab on UF’s Gainesville campus – Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009. Along with colleagues in the Netherlands, van Bruggen designed a computer model that can predict how dangerous bacteria grow in soil, compost and water sources. The research could lead to safer farming practices.
