Venom photos
The battery-powered nerve stimulator (at left) delivers current across the area of the venom gland, triggering the release of venom. The extraction technique is safer for both people and snakes than the traditional method of “milking” the animals. Ryan McCleary, a doctoral candidate, hopes to explore whether evolutionary changes may have affected the composition of the snakes’ venom, which appears as the yellow liquid in the plastic cup.
