GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida vertebrate paleontologist Larisa DeSantis demonstrates how she took enamel samples from fossilized llama (Hemiauchenia macrocephala) teeth in order to determine the animal’s dietary niche in this April 29, 2009, photo. DeSantis is the lead author on a study appearing in the June 3, 2009, issue of the journal PLoS ONE that shows ancient mammals altered their diets in response to past global warming.
