Sawfish photo
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — George Burgess, a University of Florida ichthyologist with his collection in the background, is shown here next to saws from both the endangered smalltooth sawfish and its close relative, the largetooth sawfish, in this photograph from Nov. 6, 2008. UF is now keeper of the national records collection on sawfish, just as it oversees the world’s database on shark attacks. Distinguished by its long rostrum or saw, the sawfish is a historical and cultural icon that is rapidly disappearing.
