Brain stem cells sensitive to space radiation

Street renamed and monument unveiled in honor of Lt. Dahlem

A section of Northwest 17th Street between West University Avenue and Eighth Avenue was renamed Lt. Corey Dahlem Drive on Friday, Dec. 7. The renaming was in honor of Dahlem, a 22-year-veteran Gainesville Police officer who was killed by a drunken driver the night of UF’s second men’s basketball national championship in April.

Former World War II prisoner of war to speak at fall commencement

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Andrew Hines, a former prisoner of war and a successful engineer, businessman, civil servant and philanthropist, will speak at the University of Florida’s graduate degree commencement ceremony Dec. 14. Hines graduated from UF in 1947.
The advanced degree ceremony is one of five commencement ceremonies being held this fall.

New York Times: Martin Uman

Orlando Sentinel: Ron Cave

Ron Cave, a scientist at UF’s Biological Control Research and Containment Laboratory in Fort Pierce, was quoted in a Dec. 9 Orlando Sentinel story about the introduction of an exotic wasp to save the sago palm, which is being devastated by scale. The quote was the result of a news release.

Miami Herald: Marjorie Hoy

Federal grant to expand Florida Museum’s program for Head Start

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History has received a $397,298 federal grant to expand its “Marvelous Explorations through Science and Stories” program in Marion County Head Start classrooms.
