Boy undergoes rare surgery to correct life-threatening disease

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A 4-year-old Ocala boy born with a severe form of scoliosis became one of the first children in the Southeast to receive a titanium rib device that will allow his rib cage to expand as he grows, said University of Florida surgeons, who performed the two-and-a-half-hour operation today at Shands at UF medical center.

US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg paid a visit to the University of Florida recently to honor an old friend, the late, famed attorney Chesterfield Smith. UF’s Levin College of Law dedicated a new classroom in Smith’s name.

Astronomy Department shines light on East Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — As part of an ongoing effort to reach out to the community, the University of Florida Department of Astronomy is hosting “Stars Shine on East Gainesville,” a celebration of art, science and culture, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at Joseph A. Gift creates park and helps establish $2 million UF endowment

UF research yields new insight on spread of E. coli in spinach

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Conventional wisdom holds that harmful bacteria on fruits and vegetables are the remnants of contamination skulking on the exterior of the plant’s surface—easily washed away by conventional surface sterilization techniques.
