Media credentials to be required at Spike Lee speech

All news media representatives attending the University of Florida speech by filmmaker Spike Lee on Feb. 1 in the O’Connell Center will be required to show press credentials in order to gain access to the media/press area.

Black history month events offer cultural and historical education

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — In celebration of February’s Black History Month, the University of Florida will offer a month-long schedule of events and festivities to pay tribute to blacks’ struggles, successes and scholarship.

UF President Machen to speak at Writing on the Wall Project Closing Ceremony

GAINESVILLE,Fla. – University of Florida President Bernie Machen will speak at the Writing on the Wall Project Closing Ceremony and Teardown at 1 p.m. Friday at the Plaza of the Americas.

Star of musical “Rent” to speak at UF

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Anthony Rapp, star of the musical “Rent” and author of “Without You,” will speak at the University of Florida at 8 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. The doors will open at 7:15 p.m. and the speech is free and open to the public. After the speech, Rapp will sign books.

Leading gay rights advocate to speak at UF

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The former director of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy organization, will speak Jan. 30 at the University of Florida.

Florida Museum home-school classes focus on fossils

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History will offer a four-week home-school class series titled “Fossils: Clues from the Past” from 10 a.m. to noon on Jan. 30, Feb. 6, Feb. 13 and Feb. 20 for children ages 7-11.

UF researchers hopeful canker can be managed

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The fight to eradicate citrus canker from Florida ended last week when federal officials announced they’d stop funding removal of exposed trees, but researchers with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences are confident that in time the disease can be managed to ensure the future viability of the $9.1 billion Florida citrus industry.

Florida Museum holds ‘Glow’ opening activities Jan. 28

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History will explore the chemical process behind the phenomenon of natural light and its value for humans when it opens the traveling exhibition “Glow: Living Lights” Jan. 28.
