Museum receives grant to start MESS program in Marion County

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History has received a $397,143 grant from the Administration for Children, Youth and Families/Head Start Bureau to expand its Marvelous Explorations through Science and Stories program into Marion County.

Popular photo exhibit to remain at Florida Museum through Jan. 18

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History will extend the display of John Moran’s “Journal of Light: A Photographer’s Search for the Soul of Florida” traveling exhibit until Jan. 18. The popular exhibit features more than 50 color photographs of Florida wildlife and environments with an emphasis on Florida waters.

New initiative to create residence hall of the future

It’s no longer enough for a college residence hall to provide just four walls and a bed. The campus housing of today must foster learning and comfort while balancing environmental and technological concerns and do so in a way that’s affordable to both the school and the students.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Tropical Conservation and Development Program (TCD) at the University of Florida (UF) received an honorable mention in the science and technology category of the 2005 Chico Mendes Environmental Award from the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment. The prize recognizes the work of individuals and organizations that are committed to the preservation and sustainable use of natural resources in the Brazilian Amazon.

“Helping Our Neighbors” for Christmas

The goal of the community partners is to provide help to our neighbors who live in the outlying and rural areas in Alachua County. On Dec. 21, more than 200 Thanksgiving baskets will be delivered to families in Alachua, Archer, Hawthorne, High Springs, LaCrosse, Micanopy, Newberry and Waldo. UF and the MLK Commission of Florida will ease the burden in a small way for needy families in our outlying areas. The estimated number of people who will be served is more than 1,000.
