UF study: Women increasingly pick husbands’ surnames over their own

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — What’s in a name – or two names? Quite a bit, says a University of Florida professor, whose research finds that a growing number of brides are returning to tradition when taking a man’s hand in marriage, assuming his name instead of keeping their own as a symbol of independent identity.

“Helping Our Neighbors” for Thanksgiving

The goal of the community partners is to help our neighbors who live in the outlying and rural areas of Alachua County. On Nov. 18, more than 200 Thanksgiving baskets will be delivered to families in Alachua, Archer, Hawthorne, High Springs, LaCrosse, Micanopy, Newberry and Waldo. The estimated number of people who will be served is more than 1,000.

Youth Orchestra presents winter concert at Phillips Center

The Alachua County Youth Orchestra will help kick off the holiday season with its annual winter concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 27 in the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Florida.

Scientists use mice to mimic Alzheimer’s therapy

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Researchers with the University of Florida and the California Institute of Technology have developed a new strain of genetically modified mice that allow scientists to examine the potential usefulness of new therapies for Alzheimer’s disease.
