GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida anthropologist Jack Kugelmass on Oct. 18 studies a photograph in his home that he took years ago of costumed participants in the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, a visible sign of the gay presence in Halloween festivities. Kugelmass, author of a book on the parade, said the opportunities for masquerade, dress-up and choosing one’s identity help to make Halloween an extremely significant holiday for the gay community. The parade has stimulated the growth of spin-off parades in other cities in and outside the United States, he said.
