NaviGATOR, the University of Florida’s robot car, wheels slowly around a test track near Gainesville recently. Built by a group of University of Florida students and faculty, the car was one of 40 selected Monday (June 6, 2005) as semifinalists in the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency’s Grand Challenge robot car race. Team members will bring the car – which is outfitted with 10 computers as well as numerous sensors and navigational equipment – to California for qualifying events in late September and early October.
