AC system maintenance pays off
Air conditioning systems fully charged with refrigerant use less electricity than undercharged systems because they run for shorter time periods. In a recent survey, University of Florida engineering researchers found that many home and business air conditioning units are undercharged at 85 percent or less. Depending on the climate where they live, consumers would save at least $300 annually by ensuring their units are fully charged (electricty cost calculated at a flat rate of 9 cents per kilowatt hour).
